Paper to CAD

Paper to CAD conversion

We convert paper drawings — blueprints, mylars, vellum, sepia prints, and original hand-drafted linen — into accurate, dimensioned CAD. This is GeoNaksha's core discipline: some of our clients send us drawings a hundred years old and get back a layered DWG that matches the original dimensions to within standard CAD tolerances.

01

The legacy problem

If you own a building that predates CAD, your as-built history lives on paper. Scans have softened lines, faded ink, water damage, or ageing mylar distortion. Rooms have been added and removed over decades, and each renovation set was drafted by a different AE firm with different conventions. No single source of truth exists. We rebuild one.

02

Our approach

We start by scanning the source at the highest practical resolution. We then rubber-sheet the scan to correct for paper distortion, ageing, and any skew introduced by earlier copying. With the image dimensionally correct, a human CAD operator redrafts every line using written dimensions from the source. We never auto-trace. Once the drawing is complete, it runs through our three-step QA process — scan inspection, overlay comparison, CAD corrections — before delivery.

Paper sources we accept

  • Blueprints (cyanotype) and black-line prints
  • Mylars and sepia prints
  • Vellum, linen, and original hand-drafted originals
  • Fire-damaged, water-stained, or torn prints (partial recovery, flagged)
  • Tracing paper sketches and field redlines
  • Scanned microfiche and microfilm
04

What you get back

  • Layered AutoCAD DWG or DXF, dimensionally accurate to the source
  • Structural, architectural, MEP, and civil data layered per discipline
  • Editable text and associative dimensions
  • An assumptions log documenting any illegible or contradictory source data
  • Optional PDF plot sets in your preferred title block
  • Original scans returned alongside the CAD files

Rubber-sheeting explained

Paper drawings distort with age. They stretch unevenly, the grid goes out of square, and scale becomes inconsistent across the sheet. Rubber-sheeting is the process of identifying known grid intersections on the scan, snapping them to their true coordinates, and warping the image so the rest of the drawing becomes geometrically correct. We do this before a single CAD line is drawn. Once the image is dimensionally true, the CAD that sits on top inherits that accuracy.
