Automated raster-to-vector software vs manual redrafting

Surpreet Mahal, Director · October 31, 2026 · 5 min read

Automatic raster-to-vector software is fast and cheap, and fine for clean, simple sheets you only need for reference. For drawings you will dimension, edit or build from, manual redrafting is more reliable: software traces the picture — including its distortion, broken lines and misread text — while a drafter redraws to the written dimensions and your CAD standard.

What automatic conversion does well

  • Clean, high-contrast scans of simple linework.
  • Large volumes where a rough, searchable vector backdrop is enough.
  • Quick reference underlays that nobody will measure from.

Where it breaks down

  • Distortion: it traces exactly what the scan shows, so skew and paper shrinkage become permanent geometry.
  • Messy output: curves become many short segments, straight walls wobble, and line types and weights are lost.
  • Text and symbols: notes, dimensions and tags are misread or come through as shapes, so they can't be edited or searched.
  • Faded and dense sheets: faint lines drop out and crowded MEP areas merge into noise.
  • Structure: there are no meaningful layers, blocks or associative dimensions — everything still has to be organised to your standard.

What manual redrafting adds

A drafter reads the drawing. Walls are drawn straight and to the written dimension, doors and fixtures become blocks, text becomes text, and every element lands on the right layer. Ambiguities are flagged rather than silently traced. The result behaves like CAD your own team drew.

A practical rule

If the drawing is only for viewing, automatic conversion may be enough. If anyone will measure, edit, coordinate or build from it — renovation sets, facility records, MEP coordination — budget for redrafting. Cleaning up auto-traced output often takes as long as drawing it properly.

GeoNaksha redrafts every sheet by hand and checks it through a three-step QA process. Send one sheet and compare for yourself: free sample within 48 hours.

Questions

Is manual CAD conversion more expensive?
Per sheet, yes. Per usable drawing, often not — once the time to clean up auto-traced output is counted.
Can automated and manual methods be combined?
Yes. A vector PDF's clean geometry can be kept and restructured, with only scanned or damaged parts redrafted.
