Why PDF dimensions come out wrong in AutoCAD — and how to fix them

A PDF imported into AutoCAD measures wrong because the PDF stores the printed sheet, not the model. If the set was plotted at 1/4" = 1'-0", printed fit-to-page, or scanned slightly skewed, the imported geometry carries that scale or distortion. Vector PDFs can usually be rescaled from one known dimension; scanned PDFs need rubber-sheeting or a redraft.

The PDF is a picture of the printed sheet

When a drawing is plotted to PDF, AutoCAD writes the paper sheet — at the plot scale — not the full-size model. A wall that is 20 feet long in the model becomes 5 inches on a sheet plotted at 1/4" = 1'-0". Import that PDF with PDFIMPORT at a scale of 1 and the wall measures 5 inches, not 20 feet.

That is the most common case, and the easiest to fix. The harder cases are PDFs that were rescaled during printing, or scans where the paper itself was distorted.

Four reasons the numbers don't match

  • Plot scale: the sheet was plotted at an architectural or engineering scale (1/8", 1/4", 1" = 20', and so on), so everything is uniformly smaller.
  • Fit to page: someone printed the PDF with "fit to page" or "shrink oversized pages", so the scale is now an odd factor like 0.93 instead of a clean ratio.
  • Unequal X and Y scale: scanners and old reprographic copies can stretch a sheet slightly more in one direction, so horizontal and vertical dimensions disagree.
  • Skew and paper distortion: a scan fed in at an angle, or a blueprint that shrank and curled over decades, distorts different parts of the sheet by different amounts.

How to fix a vector PDF

If the PDF was exported from CAD, the lines import as real geometry. Find the longest dimension on the sheet that has a written value, measure it in AutoCAD, and use SCALE with the Reference option (or ALIGN with scaling) to set it to the written value. Then check two or three other written dimensions in both directions. If they all agree, the uniform scale is fixed.

If horizontal and vertical checks disagree, the PDF was distorted before it was saved, and a single SCALE will not fix it — treat it like a scan.

How to fix a scanned PDF

A scanned PDF imports as an image with no geometry at all. Tracing over it inherits every distortion in the scan. The reliable method is rubber-sheeting: pick control points with known positions — grid intersections, column centres, dimensioned corners — and warp the image so those points land where the written dimensions say they should. Only then is the drawing redrafted on top.

Even after rubber-sheeting, the written dimensions on the drawing are the authority, not the picture. Where the picture and the written number disagree, the number wins, and the disagreement should be logged.

How we handle it at GeoNaksha

We never trust a PDF's scale. Every sheet is sized from its written dimensions, scanned sheets are rubber-sheeted before drafting, and anything contradictory — a dimension string that doesn't add up, a scale that varies across the sheet — goes into an assumptions log and is raised with you before delivery. Every sheet then passes our three-step QA: scan inspection, overlay comparison and CAD corrections.

Questions

What scale should I use in PDFIMPORT?
Use the inverse of the plot scale: a sheet plotted at 1/4" = 1'-0" needs a factor of 48 to return to full size in inches. If you don't know the plot scale, import at 1 and rescale from a written dimension with SCALE › Reference.
Why do horizontal and vertical dimensions disagree after I rescale?
The sheet was stretched unevenly when it was copied or scanned. A uniform scale can't fix that; the image needs rubber-sheeting to control points, or the drawing needs redrafting to its written dimensions.
Can AutoCAD convert a scanned PDF into lines?
Not reliably. PDFIMPORT brings in vector content only; a scanned PDF arrives as an image. Raster-to-vector tools can trace it, but the output inherits the scan's distortion and usually needs heavy cleanup.
