Vector PDF or scanned PDF? How to tell in under a minute

Surpreet Mahal, Director · October 31, 2026 · 4 min read

Zoom in to 800% or more: a vector PDF stays razor-sharp, a scanned PDF turns into pixels. You can also try to select a word of text — vector PDFs usually allow it — or import the sheet with PDFIMPORT and see whether you get lines or a single image. The answer decides whether the drawing can be rebuilt from its geometry or has to be redrafted.

Test 1: zoom in

Open the PDF and zoom to 800–1600% on a line or a piece of text. Vector content stays perfectly crisp at any zoom, because it is stored as geometry. Scanned content breaks into visible pixels and fuzzy edges, because it is a photograph of paper.

Test 2: select text

Use the text-select tool on a room name or note. If you can highlight individual words, the PDF contains real text and is almost certainly vector. If the whole page highlights as one block, or nothing selects, it is an image. (Exception: a scan that was run through OCR may have an invisible text layer, so use the zoom test too.)

Test 3: import it into AutoCAD

Run PDFIMPORT on one sheet. A vector PDF comes in as lines, arcs and text you can select individually. A scanned PDF comes in as one raster image. Many real-world sets are mixed: a vector base with scanned redlines, stamps or signatures pasted on top.

Why it matters for conversion

  • Vector PDF: the geometry survives, but layers, blocks, text styles and associative dimensions are usually stripped. Conversion means rebuilding that structure to your CAD standard.
  • Scanned PDF: there is no geometry. Conversion means rubber-sheeting the image and redrafting every element to the written dimensions.
  • Mixed PDF: keep the clean vector geometry, redraft the scanned markups, and flag where the two disagree.

Scanned sheets take more drafting time than vector ones, so it is worth checking your set before asking for a quote. If you're unsure, send one representative sheet — we'll tell you what it is and return a free CAD sample within 48 hours.

Questions

Is a PDF exported from Revit or AutoCAD always vector?
Usually, but not always. Some plot settings rasterise shaded areas or the whole sheet. Run the zoom test on linework and text to be sure.
Can a scanned PDF be turned into a vector PDF?
Software can trace it, but the result inherits the scan's distortion and mistakes broken or faint lines. For drawings you will build from, redrafting to the written dimensions is more reliable.
